An easement  grants another entity the right to cross or otherwise use a portion of your private land for a specified purpose. A utility easement is the most common type of easement, which gives access rights to a utility company or a local municipality to install, maintain, upgrade, and repair utility lines (like overhead electrical, telephone or television lines, or underground electric, water, sewer, cable, etc.). This allows for utility companies to cooperatively run lines or cables to provide services to residents, rather than each company running it lines seperately. We would like to secure a utility easement on your property, likely adjacent to a power pole, in order to build fiber optic internet connectivity for your neighborhood.

Easements are specified in a property deed, which is typically recorded at the county courthouse, and available  to property owners upon the purchase of a property. The details may also be defined in a document known as a Conveyance of Easement.

TDS has permission from the company that placed and maintains the existing poles in or near your yard, to place our utility lines on those poles , but the city requires us to also secure an easement for the specific right to for our workers to come onto your property in order to access the poles.  The easement also grants permission for our lines to remain on the poles.   Putting our lines on the existing poles is the most efficient and effective method of installing and maintaining the fiber-optic lines required to upgrade the Internet capabilities of your neighborhood (and your home, should you choose our service). It is preferable to digging trenches in the public right-of-way at the front of the property.

TDS would prefer to attach our fiber lines to the existing poles in your backyard and follow the existing utility. This is the least disruptive path for building the network. The alternative is to bury the fiber lines in the front yard public right-of-way, which would require digging and restoration.

Our goal is to leave your yard intact. Most work on the poles can happen with simply putting a ladder down. Sometimes, a bucket truck is needed for access. Nevertheless, if any temporary damage occurs, TDS will send a separate restoration crew (after all installation work is complete) to perform needed repairs.

Fiber is the most efficient, state-of-the-art delivery technology for the Internet. It provides better speed, bandwidth, and reliability for home and business connections than other technologies.

  • Increased speed: up to 1Gig (Residentially) and 10Gig (Commercially)
  • Expanded bandwidth capability: fiber transmits exponentially more data than conventional technology
  • Extreme reliability: glass fiber is virtually immune to interference and doesn’t falter in harsh weather
  • High security: it’s nearly impossible for hackers to tap into the lines or sneak into a network
  • Futureproof: fiber easily feeds today’s technology-hungry homes, with room to spare for what tomorrow brings
  • More green: less power means less carbon output, lower emissions, and lower prices.
  • Nationwide network: we connect to Tier 1 IP transit providers for nationwide coverage
