TDS announces completion of two more ARRA broadband projects

Stimulus-funded projects in New Hampshire and Alabama now make high-speed Internet service accessible to about 2,000 customers.

Today, TDS Telecommunications Corp. (TDS®) announced completion of two more stimulus-funded projects. The projects, funded in part by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), make high-speed Internet service accessible to about 2,000 more households in parts of New Hampshire and Alabama.

The project in New Hampshire, around Warner and Bradford, makes high-speed Internet service accessible to about 800 households. TDS installed about 14 miles of fiber optics cabling and placed 11 cabinets (which protect the advanced network electronics) throughout its Merrimack County Telephone Company. TDS projected the cost at nearly $2.7 million. The RUS grant covered 75 percent of the cost and TDS invested the remaining 25 percent (about $670,000) to expand broadband to more businesses and residents.

The project around Centre and Cedar Bluff, Alabama, makes high-speed Internet service accessible to about 1,200 households in the area. TDS installed nearly 60 miles of fiber optics cabling and placed 22 cabinets throughout its Peoples Telephone Company. TDS projected the cost at about $5.55 million. The RUS grant covered 75 percent of the cost and TDS invested the remaining 25 percent, nearly $1.4 million.

These projects are among 44 that TDS is receiving funding for from the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Rural Utilities Service (RUS) as part of the ARRA. TDS has now completed twelve of its ARRA projects.

Nationwide, more than 95 percent of TDS customers already have access to high-speed Internet service. TDS is intent on providing as many remaining customers with broadband connectivity as possible. According to TDS, federal stimulus funds are helping to close the gap and deliver Internet connectivity to more than 20,000 customers.
