TDS® announces completion of two ARRA broadband stimulus projects

Completed projects in Ala. and N.Y. deliver high-speed Internet service to a combined 1,850 households

TDS Telecom (TDS®) announces completion of two more American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) stimulus-funded broadband Internet projects. The completion means a combined 1,850 more households in parts of Alabama and New York gain access to high-speed Internet service.

TDS is receiving funding for 44 projects, including these two, from the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Rural Utilities Service (RUS) as part of the ARRA.

In Alabama, nearly 550 residents around Grove Hill, which is part of TDS’ Butler Telephone Company, now have access to high-speed Internet service. In mid-January, TDS announced a portion of this Alabama project was accessible to customers. Now, it’s complete and more than 90 miles of fiber optics cabling was installed. In addition, eight cabinets (which protect the advanced network electronics) were placed in order to connect more residents and businesses to high-speed Internet service. TDS projected the cost at about $3.9 million, which is funded in part by the RUS grant.

TDS’ stimulus-funded project in New York included the installation of about 40 miles of fiber optics cabling and 19 cabinets. In early December, TDS announced a portion of this New York project was available to customers. Today, it’s complete and more than 1,300 residents around Deposit, Harpursville, and Sanford, which is part of TDS’ Deposit Telephone Company have gained access to high-speed Internet service in this area. TDS projected the cost at about $4.2 million. The RUS grant covered 75 percent of the cost and TDS invested the remaining 25 percent (more than $1 million) to expand broadband to more businesses and residents.

Nationwide, more than 95 percent of TDS customers already have access to high-speed Internet service. TDS is intent on providing as many remaining customers with broadband connectivity as possible. According to TDS, federal stimulus funds are helping to close the gap and deliver Internet connectivity to more than 27,000 customers.
