TDS® announces 10,000 households enabled; progress on more ARRA stimulus projects

TDS says its ARRA broadband stimulus project around Tipton, Ind. is complete; the project around Deposit, N.Y. is accessible to some customers

As of this week, TDS Telecommunications Corp. (TDS®) announces 10,000 households now have access to a high-speed Internet connection as a result of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). In addition, TDS reports the project around Tipton, Ind. is complete and the Deposit, N.Y. area project is accessible to more area residents and businesses.

The completion of the Tipton, Ind. project means high-speed Internet service is now available to nearly 400 households in the area. TDS installed about seven miles of fiber optics cabling and six cabinets (which protect the advanced network electronics) throughout its Tipton Telephone Company exchange. TDS projected the cost of the project to be about $1.35 million. The Rural Utilities Service (RUS) grant covered 75 percent of the cost and TDS invested the remaining 25 percent (about $340,000) to expand broadband to more residents.

Partial completion of the project around Deposit, N.Y. provides some area households and businesses access to high-speed Internet service. The project, which is expected to wrap up by the end of January 2014, will provide about 1,200 area households with access to a high-speed Internet connection. More than 40 miles of fiber optics and 19 new cabinets are being installed in this TDS exchange known as Deposit Telephone Company.

These projects are among 44 that TDS is receiving funding for from the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) RUS as part of the ARRA. Customers interested in signing up for services should call 888-CALL-TDS (888-225-5837).

Nationwide, more than 95 percent of TDS customers already have access to high-speed Internet service. TDS is intent on providing as many remaining customers with broadband connectivity as possible. According to TDS, federal stimulus funds are helping to close the gap and deliver Internet connectivity to more than 20,000 customers.
