TDS completes first phase of Maine fiber expansion

TDS Telecommunications (TDS®) has completed the first phase of its fiber network expansion in rural Maine, providing access to high-speed internet to nearly 22,000 homes and businesses.

Initial construction of the network began in 2022 and concluded earlier this year, reaching two dozen communities in Maine. The project delivered state-of-the-art internet to residents and businesses in these areas and represents a substantial upgrade over previous service.

TDS will continue its efforts to upgrade more locations in its Maine service area through the federal Enhanced Alternative Connect America Cost Model (E-ACAM) program, which supports the company’s ability to make long-term investments to improve rural broadband. More details, including locations and timelines, will be shared before construction commences. Under the program, TDS plans to improve internet speeds in all of its communities over the next four years.

“We’re seen first-hand the significant positive impact these network improvements can have on communities, families, and individuals,” said Drew Petersen, TDS Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs. “We’re excited to bring these upgrades to Maine and help our communities thrive.”

Communities included in the first phase of TDS’ project included Athens, Carrabassett, Embden Lake, Etna, Hampden, Harmony, Hartland, Kingfield, Mercer, New Vineyard, Norridgewock, North Anson, North New Portland, Phillips, Rome, Salem, Solon, Stratton, Strong, Swan’s Island, Warren, Weld, West Gardiner, and West Ripley.

Internet speeds will reach up to 8 Gigabit in some areas of TDS’ newly expanded fiber internet network in Maine, which the company has served since 1971. These speeds are ideal for commercial businesses and large households, allowing for instantaneous uploading and downloading of large files.

Included in the company’s range of fiber speed options is a low-cost product for households that were enrolled in the federal Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP). TDS Connect includes high-speed internet at a heavily discounted rate to help close the digital divide.
