New Area Code to be added to 530 Area Code in California
TDS Telecommunications (TDS®) is alerting its customers in the Northeastern California region about the upcoming changes.
Known as an “Area Code Overlay,” this change affects residents served by the (530) area code in the communities of Minersville, Olinda, Platina, and Trinity Center, California. The change ensures availability of an ongoing supply of telephone numbers in California.
The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) will begin the process to introduce a new area code to the area now served by the 530 area code, as the 530 area code is expected to be depleted of phone numbers by September 2025. Pending approval by the CPUC, the new area code will be introduced on top of the 530 area code using the overlay method.
The CPUC has made available a recorded webcast to inform the public about the overlay. Topics to be discussed in the recorded webcast include: (1) History of the 530 area code; (2) Area code relief process; (3) Overlay relief method; (4) Effects of the pending overlay; and (5) Implementation periods.
The recorded webcast will be available to view and download at https://www.cpuc.ca.gov/AreaCodes/ beginning Jan. 6, 2023. Comments about the information presented in the webcast may be submitted to the CPUC Public Advisor's Office by e-mail at public.advisor@cpuc.ca.gov, or by postal mail to 320 W. 4th Street, Suite 500, Los Angeles, CA 90013 by March 6, 2023.
