Waynesboro Middle School in Tennessee receives $2,500 federal technology grant
TDS® sponsors program; only 10 schools nationwide receiving FRED grant
Yesterday, Waynesboro Middle School in Tennessee received a $2,500 technology grant from the Foundation for Rural Education and Development (FRED). During an all school assembly, TDS Telecommunications Corp. (TDS®), a supporting member of FRED, presented the check to students and faculty. TDS also surprised the school with a Kindle Fire.
Waynesboro Middle School applied for the grant in the fall. It’s one of only 10 schools in the United States receiving a FRED technology grant. This grant will enable the school to offer its students (of which 74 percent are eligible for the federal free/reduced meal program) more technology-based learning opportunities. The school will use the funds to help close the education gap that currently exists.
“We believe our students deserve the best education possible,” said school principal Talitha Willard, Ph.D. “Students who are economically disadvantaged deserve to be challenged and educated as well as students in more prosperous areas. For these reasons we applied for the technology grant.”
The school plans to use the funds to purchase Kid’s College©. The program combines adaptive technology with standards-aligned curriculum to deliver effective, targeted, and engaging instruction. It includes gap assessments and progress monitoring so the school can identify the areas of greatest need for each classroom, grade level, and individual student.
“TDS is proud to present this check to Waynesboro Middle School,” says Tony Bugher, market manager for TDS. “It’s an honor to be part of the FRED program and to help make a difference in the academic success of so many young people.”
The FRED grant program, now in its eleventh year, awards funds to public schools that are working in cooperation with their local telecommunications companies to increase the use of technology to enhance the learning experience.
