TDS signs agreement with Janesville, Wisconsin to build an all-fiber network

About 30K addresses will gain ultra-fast internet connections up to 2Gig

TDS Telecommunications LLC (TDS®) and the city of Janesville have signed a Memorandum of Understanding agreement, greenlighting the company’s plans to build an all-fiber network across the community.

The fiber-to-the-home build, expected to begin in June, will ultimately connect about 30,000 Janesville addresses to super-fast 2Gig internet, plus TV and phone services.

“High-speed internet is essential to building a community where everyone has the opportunity to succeed," said Mark Freitag, Janesville City Manager. "The addition of TDS' fiber optics network will provide our city's residents and businesses with another option for the modern internet connectivity needed to spur Janesville's growth."

TDS has offered residential and business communications solutions in Janesville for more than 20 years, but this will be the first time the Madison, Wisconsin headquartered company will offer fiber-based Internet, TV, and digital phone services to the area.

“Janesville has always been a center for both commerce and outdoor activities in Southeast Wisconsin,” says Drew Petersen, senior vice president of External Affairs at TDS. “We’re proud to make this substantial investment in the community’s future by bringing the dependable, high-quality fiber connections residents and businesses need for today and tomorrow.”

Fiber networks are considered the “gold standard” of all internet technologies because they provide the best performance and reliability. Only 43% of U.S. households have access to a fiber connection, according to a Fiber Broadband Association report.

TDS’ fiber services will become available in phases, with the first customers expected to be connected before the end of the year.

Residents will gain access to a range of internet speeds up to 2Gig upload and download, TDS TV®+, and phone services. For businesses, the build will add up to 10Gig dedicated connections, in addition to the product suite already available. The Janesville project will include installing fiber-to-the-home connections and laying underground fiber in neighborhoods and business parks.

Janesville joins a growing list of Wisconsin communities where TDS is actively expanding its fiber footprint. The company recently announced plans to triple its fiber service addresses by 2026. TDS is building networks in the Fox Valley, Green Bay, and Eau Claire, and recently completed fiber network builds in Wausau and Stevens Point.
