Construction complete on TDS’ fiber network in Wausau, Wisconsin

About 260 miles of fiber infrastructure buried to bring super-fast internet to about 16,000 area addresses

Construction on TDS Telecom’s (TDS®) fiber network build in Wausau, Wisconsin is now complete. The high-tech infrastructure project, first announced in July of 2019, now connects more than 16,000 area addresses to high-speed internet, TV, and phone service. The fiber-optic technology delivers up to 1Gig download and speeds to residents and up to 10Gig dedicated connections, plus TV and phone service.

“Thank you to both residents and city leaders for your patience while we worked diligently to build this extensive state-of-the-art network,” says TDS Senior Vice President of External Affairs, Drew Petersen. “This community cooperation means Wausau has gained infrastructure that’s meeting today’s demands and is ready also for the future.”

With the digging completed, TDS will finalize behind the scenes work to launch services to any remaining areas. Over the last two years, the Madison-based company buried more than 260 miles of fiber cable across Wausau to enable the network. Petersen noted that Allen Wesolowski, P.E. City Engineer, deserved special recognition for, “all of his hard work which was instrumental to keeping the project moving.”

In addition to building a fiber network, the company has also been growing roots in the Wausau area. TDS opened a retail location at 227040 Rib Mountain Drive in 2020 and now employs 37 people in Marathon County.

“We live and work in the communities we serve, so it’s an important part of our culture to give back whether it be to Gigi’s Playhouse, the Girl Scouts, or sponsoring community events such as Concerts on the Square, the Grand Theater Broadway Series, or the Wausau Woodchucks,” says Petersen.

In addition to delivering a range of fast, symmetrical speed internet products starting at 300Mbps and up to 1Gig, TDS’ build introduced a sophisticated new TV and phone provider to the Wausau area. TDS offers TDS TV®+, its full-featured TV product to both residents and businesses. Businesses within the TDS Fiber footprint can order internet access and transport connections up to 10Gig via dedicated fiber and managedIP, TDS’ hosted VoIP communications solution.

With build work complete, TDS will launch services to any remaining service areas shortly. Residents can visit TDStelecom.com or call 888-225-5837 to learn more and sign up for service. Open TDS positions can be found at TDStelecom.com/careers.
